With my pick-up templates complete, I finally routed the cavities. I simply clamped the template to the body after lining it up on the center-lines. Then, with a 1/2" pattern bit, I routed the cavities removing about 1/8" in each pass. I routed to a depth of about 1/16" less than the final depth. When I finalize the depth calculation, I can finish the route without having to put the template back on. This is because I have another 1/2" pattern bit that has a cutting length of only 3/8". This allows me to lower the bit into the routed cavity and use it's walls as the reference surface.
